To Whom It May Concern,
The purpose of this paper is to inform children and their parents about the dangers of the internet. The internet can be a powerful resource when it is used correctly, but it can also be a place that leads to adults engaging in sexual conduct with underage children. There are many ways to prevent this from happening. Some of these precautions can include monitoring your child’s computer use, if they are young. You should also try to avoid people who act suspicious and you shouldn’t give out personal information.
If a child has a profile on a social networking site, like MySpace or Facebook, you should look at their profile to make sure they do not give out any personal information about themselves. Information that should not be given on these sites include: your last name, address, and phone number. You should also keep the city in which you live and the school you go to private. People who give out personal information about themselves are more open targets to a pedophile.
Another precaution to take if you are having conversations with people online is to avoid meeting them. If you really want to meet them make sure you are in a group with friends or your parents.
Another precaution to take is to avoid people with suspicious behavior. People are not always who they say they are. If they try to talk about something that you are not comfortable with and they keep pressing the issue, consider ending your conversation and blocking them from talking to you.
In conclusion, I would like to say that the internet can be a fun, but dangerous place. You should try to consider who you are about to talk to before you engage them in a conversation. Here is a list of precautions that can be taken to avoid predators:
- Never meet up with a stranger
- Try not to accept friend requests from people you do not know
- Do not give out your personal information
Put your profile on private so it is not viewable to everyone - If you really want to meet up with someone make sure your with a group of friends or your parent
- Try to get background information on the person your talking to
- Be aware that there are sexual predators out there
- Try to avoid people with strange or suspicious behavior
- Do not tell people too many things about yourself
- Make sure you find a safe way to make sure the person is who they say they are before you get too close to them.
- If your child is young, parents, try to monitor their computer use
These are not the only ways that you can avoid internet predators there are many others. The internet can be a fun but dangerous place. I urge you to take the necessary precautions before you start talking to people.
